Moonvine MCP

Configure an MCP client to connect to Moonvine, verify tool discovery, and troubleshoot common connection errors.

Endpoint: https://go.moonvine.io/api/mcp

Transport: Remote HTTP using JSON-RPC 2.0

Authentication: Bearer credential issued by Moonvine

Protocol version: 2024-11-05

Before You Start

You need an active Moonvine MCP credential and a client that supports remote HTTP MCP servers. The credential determines which organization, resources, and tools the client can access.

Moonvine API keys begin with mv_. Store the key in the client’s secret manager or an environment variable. Do not put it in source control, browser code, screenshots, support messages, or prompts.

Connection Values

  • Server name: moonvine
  • URL: https://go.moonvine.io/api/mcp
  • Method: Remote HTTP
  • Header name: Authorization
  • Header value: Bearer YOUR_MOONVINE_MCP_KEY

Configure Your MCP Client

  1. Open the client’s MCP server or integrations settings.
  2. Add a new remote HTTP server named moonvine.
  3. Enter https://go.moonvine.io/api/mcp as the server URL.
  4. Add an Authorization header whose value is Bearer, one space, and your Moonvine credential.
  5. Save the server, then reconnect or restart the client so it initializes the connection and discovers tools.

Generic remote MCP configuration

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "moonvine": {
      "type": "http",
      "url": "https://go.moonvine.io/api/mcp",
      "headers": {
        "Authorization": "Bearer ${MOONVINE_MCP_KEY}"
      }
    }
  }
}

Configuration field names differ between clients. If your client has a dedicated secret field, use it instead of saving the key directly in a configuration file.

Verify the Connection

  1. Confirm that the Moonvine server is shown as connected.
  2. Open the client’s MCP tool list and confirm that Moonvine tools appear.
  3. Ask a narrow question about the connected organization, such as “What changed in search performance this week?”
  4. Check that the response refers to organization-specific evidence and identifies missing or stale data when applicable.

The available tool list is credential specific. A valid connection may expose fewer tools than another Moonvine account if the credentials have different permissions.

Tools Available to Account Users

Moonvine exposes organization-scoped tools. Your client normally selects the appropriate tool from your question, but the names below are useful when configuring allowlists or testing a connection. The exact list returned by tool discovery depends on the credential and the data sources connected to the account.

Ask Moonvine

moonvine_chat is the primary conversational tool. It accepts a message and answers using the connected organization’s Moonvine context. Use it for questions that cross several sources or require interpretation.

  • What changed this week, and what should we investigate first?
  • Why did search traffic fall while conversions increased?
  • Prepare a five-minute briefing using the latest available evidence.

Read the weekly report

moonvine_report_data_export returns the organization’s persisted weekly report data. It is the best choice when an answer must match a shipped report, its executive summary, or a specific report week. An organization-scoped credential cannot request another organization or a fleet-wide report.

Website analytics and search

  • moonvine_ga4_query reads connected Google Analytics data for periods such as last week, last month, or last quarter.
  • moonvine_gsc_query reads connected Google Search Console evidence, including queries, pages, clicks, impressions, and search visibility.
  • moonvine_sheets_query and moonvine_tableau_query read those sources when they are connected and permitted for the account.

If a source is not connected or its stored evidence is stale, the tool should report that limitation instead of filling the gap with an estimate.

Competitors, social, and news

  • moonvine_competitor_lookup reads the competitors configured for the organization and their available evidence.
  • moonvine_social_lookup returns profiles, recent posts, and available metrics for the organization, its competitors, or both. It can be filtered by Instagram, YouTube, or LinkedIn.
  • moonvine_social_trends summarizes recurring hashtags and topics from stored competitor social posts for a selected period.
  • moonvine_news_search searches stored organization, competitor, and industry news by text and result limit.

Documents and organization knowledge

  • moonvine_document_search searches uploaded documents and the organization knowledge base.
  • moonvine_client_facts_query reads stored facts and preferences for the organization.
  • moonvine_vox_query reads available brand voice and tone guidance.
  • moonvine_learnings_query reads saved corrections, discoveries, and prior learnings available to the account.
  • moonvine_dna_query explains Moonvine’s analysis and communication methodology.

Export results

moonvine_export_data converts an organization-scoped request into CSV or JSON. Use it after identifying the dataset and fields you need. The export remains limited to data available to the credential.

Request an approved refresh

If the credential includes it, moonvine_request_data_refresh can queue fresh evidence from an approved collector for the same organization. Supported refresh sources are website, public_company, documents, and market_voices. It does not fetch an arbitrary URL or access another customer’s data.

Resources Available to Account Users

MCP resources are read-only organization data that a compatible client can list and open directly. A credential may expose all or only some of these resource types:

  • moonvine://docs/{org}/list — uploaded document index
  • moonvine://docs/{org}/{docId} — one uploaded document
  • moonvine://ga4/{org}/current — latest stored GA4 metrics
  • moonvine://ga4/{org}/trends — stored GA4 trends for the previous 12 weeks
  • moonvine://style/{org}/voice — voice and tone guidance
  • moonvine://style/{org}/brand — stored brand guidelines
  • moonvine://news/{org}/recent — recent stored news
  • moonvine://knowledge/{org}/learnings — saved learnings
  • moonvine://knowledge/{org}/facts — stored organization facts

TRY IT

Example Requests

Use these as written, or replace the subject and timeframe with the question you need answered.

  • Summarize the latest weekly report and cite the evidence behind each finding.
  • Compare GA4 traffic and Search Console clicks for the last four weeks.
  • Show the competitor social posts that gained the most attention this month.
  • Search our uploaded documents for the approved positioning statement.
  • List recent news about our company and configured competitors, including source dates.
  • Export the current findings as JSON with evidence, freshness, and recommended next action.

Access Boundaries

Administrative key management, cross-organization access, corpus maintenance, imports, source recovery, and other operator workflows are not part of the customer MCP surface documented here.

  • Organization scope: customer credentials are bound to one organization.
  • Capability scope: the credential can expose an explicit subset of tools and resources.
  • Connected-source scope: a tool cannot return private source data that the organization has not connected.
  • Service limits: per-minute and daily request limits may apply.

Troubleshooting

The client cannot connect

  • Confirm that the URL is exactly https://go.moonvine.io/api/mcp.
  • Confirm that the client supports remote HTTP MCP servers.
  • Confirm that the header begins with Bearer , including the space.
  • Remove accidental quotation marks or whitespace around the credential.

The server connects but no tools appear

Reconnect or restart the client to repeat MCP initialization and tool discovery. If the list remains empty, the credential may not have any allowed tools.

A specific tool is unavailable

The credential can be valid while a particular tool or resource is outside its allowlist. Request access to that capability rather than replacing the client configuration.

The response reports missing or stale data

The MCP connection is working. Check the corresponding data connection in Moonvine or request a refresh if the credential permits it.

The credential stopped working

The key may have expired, been revoked, or reached a service limit. Contact Moonvine without sending the credential itself. Replace the saved key after a new credential is issued.

Credential Safety

  • Use a separate credential for each organization and environment.
  • Keep credentials out of repositories and shared configuration files.
  • Revoke and replace a credential immediately if it may have been exposed.
  • Remove credentials from clients and machines that no longer require access.

Setup Is Complete When

  • The client reports the Moonvine server as connected.
  • The expected Moonvine tools appear in tool discovery.
  • An organization-specific question returns grounded evidence.
  • The credential is stored through the client’s secure secret mechanism.
